Senate. Saturday, January 7, 1865.
The Senate was not in session to-day, it having adjourned on Friday to meet again on Monday.
House of Representatives.
The House met at 11 o'clock. Prayer by Rev. Dr. Read.
The Speaker laid before the House a communication from the Clerk of the House of Representatives, containing estimates of appropriations for pay and mileage of members of Congress.
Referred to the Committee on Ways and Means.
On motion of Mr. De Jarnette, of Virginia, the rules were suspended and the following resolution adopted:
" Resolved, That a special committee of five be appointed by the Chair, whose duty it shall be to report what legislation, if any, is necessary and proper to relieve from the payment of taxes people residing in such districts, towns, or counties, as have been subjected to depredations by the public enemy, and are unable to pay taxes assessed against them without unreasonable sacrifice."
