The War News. On Monday, the enemy's batteries along the Appomattox shelled our Chesterfield works for several hours. At the same time, several shells were thrown by the enemy into Petersburg. During yesterday nothing of interest occurred on the lines. At half-past 10 o'clock on Monday night a tremendous explosion was heard in this city, which is, as yet, unexplained. It appeared to be in the direction of Dutch gap. The houses on Church Hill were shaken by the concussion. A flag of truce arrived at Varina on last Saturday morning, bringing sixty-odd Confederate prisoners, forty-five of whom were surgeons, and the rest citizens and military officers, in whose cases special exchanges had been effected. Most of the surgeons belonged to General Early's army, and were left in charge of our wounded after the battle of Winchester, and so fell into the hands of the enemy. Among the citizens was Mr. E. A.
