interesting particulars of the repulse of these gallant men. Flag-Captain Breeeze accompanied the expedition, with Lieutenant Preston, assistant flag-captain; Lieutenant Benjamin H. Porter, commander of the flagship Malvern; Lieutenant Commanding Lao made their escape after dark. Ensign Dayton, of the Nereus, who had been for eleven months a prisoner along with Lieutenant Preston and Lieutenant Porter, at Charleston, observing his two comrades fall, seized a rifle and devoted himself to reveng side. The losses of the naval brigade were not less than two hundred and fifty in killed and wounded. Flag-Lieutenant Samuel W. Preston and Lieutenant Benjamin H. Porter, commander of the Malvern, were both shot dead, the former by a ball thrundred men in killed and wounded, and amongst them some gallant officers.
