Lemuel and Elizabeth Howell were up for a hearing on the charge of stealing three thousand dollars in State bank notes and seventy-five dollars in gold and silver, the property of William Barrett. After an examination of witnesses, the former was discharged, but the latter was remanded for examination before the Hustings Court. George, slave of Fanny West, charged with fighting in Mrs. West's kitchen, was discharged. Monroe, slave of Willis Wilson, charged with being a runaway, was committed as such, preceding such imprisonment to receive fifteen lashes. The following cases were called up and continued: James Childress, charged with burglariously entering the store of Dunlop, Moncure & Co. with the intention of committing a theft; Cornelius Smith, a free negro, charged with aiding in, and conniving at, the escape of slaves from their owners; and Philip, slave of A. B. Lipscomb, charged with having a lot of clothing in his possession, supposed to have been stolen.
