A Confederate battery.
--The following is an extract from a letter describing the last battle before Nashville:
I wish the men that composed Stanford's battery had been engaged in a worthier cause.
They worked their guns until they and their guns were captured.
Out of seventy men, forty were killed and wounded.
All the commissioned officers were killed.
The commander of the battery was the handsomest man I ever saw. He was shot in the heart, and fell, straight as an arrow, beside one of his guns.
He had the prettiest hand and foot I ever saw. He had on a fine pair of boots.
Some soldier remarked: "I'll bet those boots were stolen from some of our fellows. " "By G — d!" says Captain Boyd, "you haven't got a man in your brigade who can wear that pair of boots." I guess he hit it, too. He had a fine diamond ring on his left little finger, which I reckon isn't there now.-- Yankee Paper.
