A desperate encounter with a burglar. --On Saturday night, Mr. Francis Smith, a provision dealer of New York, was robbed and shot by a burglar, who, with blackened face and disguise, entered himoney, containing one thousand two hundred and twenty dollars, with which he was escaping when Mr. Smith seized hold of him, and a deadly struggle ensued. Both men tasseled with the utmost desperation, and at a moment when Mr. Smith, by a herculean effort, succeeded in raising the ruffian from his feet, the latter drew a revolver and discharged three barrels of it at him in rapid succession, two bullets taking effect in the body. Thus disabled, Smith sank upon the floor, whilst his assailant, with extraordinary agility, sprang out of the window, reached a piazza or shed, and then jumped axtraordinary agility, sprang out of the window, reached a piazza or shed, and then jumped a distance of some fifteen or twenty feet, and escaped. Mr. Smith's condition is considered very critical.
