Naval officer; born in Washington county, Md., Aug. 20, 1802; entered the navy as midshipman in 1819; was retired by reason of ill-health in 1855; and was recalled to the active list and promoted captain in 1856.
At the breaking out of the Civil War he was ordered to the command of the Sabine and engaged in blockading Southern ports and in operations against some of them.
He was retired in 1864, and promoted rear-admiral on the retired list in 1866.
He died in New York City, April 29, 1867.
