st of it that night. In this charge Major Moore and Captain Ballantine were wounded, and left upon the field; the former seriously, the latter not so badly. Captain Gardner also lost an arm, but got off the field. Our loss in line officers and enlisted men was very severe. Lieutenant Peeler, acting Aid-de-Camp, acted very galln Ballantine, second in command. On the third day Captain Fleming assumed command, Lieutenant Todd being second in rank. The Fifth Florida was commanded by Captain Gardner, who lost an arm on the second day, when the command devolved on Captain Bryan, and next upon Captain Hollyman.
