Terrible Tornado in New Jersey. --A severe hurricane swept over a portion of New Jersey last week. A writer says that it appeared to be confined to a narrow strip, running east and west, touching New Durham, Metuchin, Uniontown, and Woodbridge, and extending westward through Somerset county, south of this place. Such a severe one was almost unprecedented in this locality. In some places whole fields of grain were prostrated or cut down — in the latter case hardly a stalk remaining. Trees were entirely stripped of their fruit, leaves, and even branches, and, in innumerable instances, demolished. Three or four houses were blown down. One man was wounded dangerously and another seriously. Total loss, at a rough estimate, $100,000.
