Both houses are deserted, the families having been obliged to fly for their lives, amid thickly falling bomb shells, on the day of the first skirmish, one of the ladies carrying with her a helpless babe, scarce three weeks old. No reason can be assigned for this vandalism on private property, except that one of the houses, "Liberty," was for a short time occupied by some of the superior officers and a few of the sick soldiers. Since I commenced writing I have again heard the guns of the "Pawnee," directed towards the Point; but no serious attack is at present apprehended. S.
