September 16th (search for this): article 8
Contrabands Bound for Washington.
--The National Intelligencer contains the following from a correspondent:
Dear "National:"
--This morning, 16th September, coming from the Chain Bridge, I met and talked with fourteen "contrabands"--fine, hearty young negroes — from near our lines in Virginia, the old price of which "chattels," now under process of confiscation and loss by Southern insanity, could not be less than $10,000 or $12,000. What has the South done to herself?
Committed suicide.
Destroyed her own cherished institution.
How true, "Quem Deus. " &c. Eye-Witness.
