Lee knew as early as the 10th of June that Grant was preparing to cross the river, from his having torn up the York River Railroad, and thus manifestly cut himself off from the White House. He expected, however, that he would have made the attempt by way of Bottom's Bridge, since by that route it is a march of only ten miles to the river, pursuing the roads which McClellan took in his retreat two years ago.
