An interesting and valuable confirmation of the simple fact of the visit of the Northmen to Vinland is given us by Adam of Bremen, who visited Denmark between 1047 and 1073, when the voyages would have been within the memory of living men and natural subjects of conversation. In speaking of the Scandinavian countries, in his book, Adam describes the colonies in Iceland andished men of Norway. Lieutenant Hermann Klatte Lieutenant Hermann Klatte, of Charleston, an officer of the German artillery during the war of the Confederacy, was born at Bremen in 1834, and came to America at the age of seventeen years. In 1855 he became a member of the German artillery, Company B, and with his command went on active duty at Charleston, December 20, 1860, then having the rank of junior second lieutenant cases in which the collection is now displayed, and in the same way made the woodwork of a new hall of archaeology, which has since been added to the museum floor. In grateful recognition of the past services conferred by Maury upon navigation and science, gold medals were struck in his honor by Prussia, Austria, Holland, Sweden and Norway. Spain, France, Sardinia, the Republic of Bremen, and Pope Pius IX presented him with a set of all the medals struck during the pontificate. England and Belgium also offered medals. Denmark, Portugal, Russia, France, Belgium and Mexico presented decorations and orders of knighthood, which last he declined (being an officer of the United States Navy). William Frederick Niemeyer was born in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, on the 12th day of May, 1840, and heroically met his death at the head of his regiment in the battle of Spotsylvania Court House, on the 12th day of May, 1864, his twenty-fourth birthday. His great grandfather, Hans Heinrich Neimeyer, was born at Hoya, Germany, in 1734, and died in 1806. His grandfather, John Christian Niemeyer, was born in 1776, at Verden, near Bremen, and came to America at the age of 18 years, and in 1813 he married Ann McLean, his second wife, the grandmother of the subject of this sketch, at Moyock, in Currituck county, North Carolina. His father, William Angus Neimeyer, died February 3d, 1900; was born April 28th, 1816, and married Sarah Howard Chandler (now living) on the 31st day of July, 1839. She is the daughter of John A. Chandler, who was one of the foremost citizens and most distinguished lawyers in Tidewater Virginia of his
