For hire --A No. 1 Man and Woman Cook. The woman will be hired with a view to a good home. Inquire of A W Taylor, At Harvey, James --Co's, Virginia st. ja 7--1t*
The Legislature. In the Senate, a bill imposing taxes for property and licenses for the support of the Government was reported yesterday by Mr. Taylor and appropriately referred. Several bills were passed, viz: A bill to amend the charter of the town of Ashland, in Hanover county. A bill to amend the 13th section of chapter 34 of the Code concerning the Virginia Military Institute. A communication from the Governor, covering a letter from Gov. Brown, of Georgia' and resolutions adopted by the Legislature of that State, was laid before the Senate. Besides the introduction and entertainment of Gen. J. H. Morgan, no other business of importance was transacted in the Senate. The House met at the usual hour, the privileged seats in the hall and the galleries being filled with visitors drawn, thither for the purpose of seeing Gen. Morgan. But little business was transacted, and that of an unimportant character. The chair was soon vacated to await the arrival of th
divine service. As Mr. Fox was about entering the pulpit some Yankee officers admonished him, as he valued his life, not to omit the prayer for Lincoln, and the old gentleman; being at their mercy, in the course of the service prayed for the President of the United States, whereupon Miss Kate Barnett got up and walked out of the church, followed by her sister, Miss Ella Barnett. They had hardly reached the door when Miss Lillis Martin followed their example, and soon she was imitated by Mrs. Taylor and her sister, Miss Latham. This of course infuriated the Yankees, and two hours afterwards the Provost- Marshal informed the ladies that every one who left the church would be allowed forty-eight hours to leave town, and if caught there after that time they would be remanded to the county jail. The ladies, immediately prepared to leave and at the expiration of the time allowed every one of them was out of the lines. General McPherson canted printed placards to be posted through the c

The Legislature. Senate.--A communication was presented in the Senate yesterday from the Governor, accompanied by a number of documents relating to the case, in regard to Ferdinand A. Winston, a Justice of the Peace in Floyd county, and referred to a select committee of five, viz: Messrs. Taylor, Marshall, Collier, Lewis, and Stephenson. A bill was reported for limiting the time for the payment of certain claims against the Commonwealth, and a bill limiting the time for the payment of interest on certain bonds of the Commonwealth. A resolution to develop and encourage domestic manufactures, and to place within the reach of the people the means of procuring such implements and machinery as may be made, was adopted. Also, a resolution for the appointment of an agent to collect the names with the rank, company, regiment, &c., of all Virginia soldiers who have been or who may be hereafter mustered into the Confederate service, and transcribe the same into suitable boo

d reputation. We all know that at the opening of that war he declined having anything to do with it, believing that it must inevitably fail. But no sooner had Gen. Taylor electrified the land by his victories than, finding that it was easier to beat the Mexicans than he thought, he hastened to rob him as far as he could of his hard-earned laurels. Never was praise more disproportion to performance than it was in the case of his Mexican campaign. Gen. Taylor had already beaten the Mexican troops until he had destroyed the better part of them, when he came in to gather the spoils of another man's victories. Far be it from us to underrate the valor of our soldiers on that occasion. But they were greatly an overmatch for the Mexicans in every respect except numbers, and both Sam Houston and Gen. Taylor had already shown that our soldiers could beat them with any odds. They were not only a degenerate race, but they had been cowed by repeated defeat before Scott had anything to do wi
