d not endure it. Napoleon would lose his crown did he attempt it — and that he knows but too well. Our own opinion is, that he will maintain the position he has assumed — that our own Government will maintain their's — and that war will follow, and that speedily. It is possible that England may be involved with France, and on the same side. It is certain that Austria will support France, and it is more than probable that she will receive the aid also of Victor Emanuel and the King of Belgium. This is a powerful combination — such as no country in Europe — except Russia — could withstand. But the peculiar situation of the belligerent parties with respect to the country in which the war is to be waged deprives it of half its terrors. If Mexico were situated with regard to France geographically as Spain is situated, it would be impossible for any foreign Power to hold its own against the force that she could send there; but she is situated with regard to the United States

Death of the King of Belgium. The last returns from Europe announce the death of a man whose name had been longer before the world than that of any public man whom he has left behind. Leopold, King of Belgium, died in Brussels on the 9th day of December. When we saw the announcement, our mind seemed to be carried back half a century, to the days of Napoleon I. and George III., of Francis rince of Orange and separated from Holland. After a war of short duration, between France and Belgium on one side, and Holland on the other, the separation was confirmed.--The Belgians chose Leopol was confirmed by France and England. From that time until his death, Leopold has been King of Belgium, or rather, we believe, King of the Belgians. It is conceded on all hands that Leopold goveopold are said to be very unpromising, and people are already looking forward to the time when Belgium shall fall, like a ripe pear, into the mouth of France. It was much to the credit of Leopold t
The demise of the King of Belgium has given rise to some interesting speculations as to its political consequence. The Paris correspondent of the London Herald says that public opinion in BelBelgium is greatly excited at articles that have appeared in certain French semi-official prints, which, after dwelling on some riotous scenes at the Students' Congress at Liege, and at a couple of stortings in the Chamber of Representatives, hinted that it might be necessary to "save society" in Belgium. One of the Belgium newspapers publishes three columns to show that "society" and liberty in BBelgium are perfectly able to save themselves. There are many people, both in England and France, who believe that England would not do anything but protest were the Emperor to "save society" in BelgBelgium by annexing that country, and that the assent of Count Von Bismark, of Prussia, to such a plan has been secured beforehand. We do not attach much importance to these conjectures. The Paris lett

At 3 o'clock the Judges retired to consider the sentence. The prisoner was sentenced by Justice Keogh to penal servitude for life. What is to be done with Belgium — speculations, Rumors, &c. The Moniteur says: "The loss of a sovereign who had gained, by his wisdom, so high a position in the councils of Europe, has excition Nationale, thinks that, with all his acknowledged ability, he was too forgetful of "the profound sense of the revolution which raised him to the throne." When Belgium separated from Holland, it earnestly desired a close connection with France, whereas King Leopold did his best to give a different direction to the sentiments of mate distrust of France. The Antwerp affair is not less grave, and we could show, on Belgian authority itself, that the citadel at Antwerp, instead of protecting Belgium, tends to deprive it of the real power which it drew from the principle of its neutrality." On the other hand, the Steels published a day or two ago the foll
