Fire in Macon, Ga. --A fire occured in Macon, Ga., on the morning of the 2d inst., which destroyed several buildings and a large amount of other property. Messrs. McCanley & Jones, Blake, Yougubluth, Bearden & Gaines were among the sufferers.

The Mercury also contains a communication of considerable length in relation to the late Gen. Gaines, and his views on the subject of national defences. Seeing that the introduction of steam power was destined to work a great change in the art of war, Gen, Gaines came to the conclusion that "the invasion and occupation of any inhabited portion of the interior sections of this country by a hs" or moving forts, from the range of whose guns the enemy could not escape. The plan of Gen. Gaines had also a feature for closing harbors against an enemy, which he describes at length in a lerce sufficient for the destruction of any hostile squadron." For more than thirty years Gen. Gaines urged his plans upon the attention of the Government at Washington, but without success. Gaines of his approbation, and gave it as his opinion that "the reason why his system of defence, wh

Cavalry, to acknowledge through the Dispatch the receipt of a box containing seventy pairs of fine woolen socks, twenty-five shirts and drawers, and other articles, a donation from Mrs. Gaines and daughter, of Asheville, N. C. The woolen socks are an article which was most needed by our men, and is one which will be most conducive to the health and comfort of the troops in the field this winter. Each of us take this opportunity of expressing our most sincere and heartfelt thanks for this generous substantial and patriotic donation. It is by such acts as this that the women of the South have endeared themselves to the Southern soldiers, showing that they appreciate their labors, and that they feel for them and sympathise with them in the exposure and hardships they must necessarily encounter, Truly,

spiracy to break up the Union! [Special Dispatch to the Richmond Dispatch.] Norfolk, Va., Feb. 8. A messenger arrived to-day, from Roanoke Island, reports that four Federal steamers were off the island last night. A large number of vessels were twelve miles below the island. An attack is expected at this point. Gen. Wise is in better health, and is making active preparations for receiving the enemy. The flag of truce steamer arrived this afternoon. She brought over Mrs. Gen. Gaines and four other ladies, on their way to New Orleans. The feeling in Washington is strong in favor of a prosecution of the war and the suppression of the rebellion. We have Northern papers of the 6th inst. France, by the latest advices, is to lead in the advance on the city of Mexico, which her troops will probably hold several years. The London Times says England will not object. She has no desire to uphold the Monroe doctrine. The Liverpool steamer Nova Scotia bring

We will pay a reward of two hundred dollars for their apprehension and delivery thus in this city, or in any jail where we can get them; or in the same proportion for the arrest of either of them: Fleming has a dark skin, about 6 feet 8 inches high, has a slight impediment in his speech, and has a wife living on the Brook turnpike. Jim Lightfoot, has a very dark skin, good teeth, about 5 feet 4 inches high, has a wife in Hanover county at Dr. Gaines's. George Washington, has a brown skin, downcast look when questioned, about 6 feet 6 inches high. Cambridge has not a very healthy appearance, brown skin, 5 feet 8 inches high, has a wife near the Second African Church.
