Αἶσα , ἡ,
A.like Μοῖρα, the divinity who dispenses to every one his lot or destiny, “ἅσσα οἱ Αἶ. γιγνομένῳ ἐπένησε” Il.20.127, cf. Od.7.197; “Αἶ. φασγανουργός” A.Ch.648 (lyr.).
II. as Appellat.,
1. decree, dispensation of a god, “τετιμῆσθαι Διὸς αἴσῃ” Il.9.608; “ὑπὲρ Διὸς αἶσαν” 17.321, cf. 6.487; “δαίμονος αἶσα κακή” Od.11.61; τεὰν κατ᾽ αἶσαν thanks to the destiny decreed by thee, Pi.N.3.16; “θεοῦ αἶσα” E.Andr. 1203 (lyr.):—κατ᾽ αἶσαν fitly, duly, Il.10.445, etc.; “κατ᾽ αἶσαν, οὐδ᾽ ὑπὲρ αἶσαν” Il.6.333, cf. B.9.32; “ἐν αἴσᾳ” A.Supp.545 (lyr.); opp. “παρ᾽ αἶσαν” Pi.P.8.13.
2. one's lot, destiny, οὐ γάρ οἱ τῇδ᾽ αἶσα . . ὀλέσθαι, ἀλλ᾽ ἔτι οἱ μοῖρ᾽ ἐστί . . Od.5.113: c. inf., “ἔτι γάρ νύ μοι αἶσα βιῶναι” 14.359, cf. 13.306, al.; κακῇ αἴσῃ . . ἑλόμην by ill luck, Il.5.209; “ἀσφαλεῖ σὺν αἴσᾳ” B.12.66; “τὸν αἶσ᾽ ἄπλατος ἴσχει” S.Aj.256 (lyr.), cf. AP7.624 (Diod.).
3. generally, share in a thing, ληΐδος, ἐλπίδος, αἶ., Od.5.40, 19.84; “χθονός” Pi.P.9.56; at a common meal (Argive), Hegesand.31; τῶ Διὸς τῶ ϝοίνω αἶ. Inscr.Cypr.148; λαχεῖν αἶ. IG5 (2).40 (Tegea); for the prov. ἐν καρὸς αἴσῃ v.s. κάρ. —Ep., Lyr., and Trag., but only in lyr. in S. and E.
