ἐπίτον-ος , ον,
A.on the stretch, strained, intense, D.S.10.17 ; of sound, Philostr.VS1.25.7.
II. ἐπίτονος (sc. ἱμάς), ὁ, a rope for stretching or tightening, back-stay of a mast (opp. πρότονος), “ἐπ᾽ αὐτῷ [ἱστῷ] ἐπίτονος βέβλητο, βοὸς ῥινοῖο τετευχώς” Od.12.423 (a στίχος ἀκέφαλος).
2. ἐπίτονοι, οἱ, the great sinews of the shoulder and arm, Pl.Ti.84e, Arist.HA515b9 (sg.) ; “νεύρων ἐπίτονοι” Pl.Lg.945c.
