φέρτατος 1

I.bravest, best, Hom.:—of things, κακῶν φέρτατον the best, i. e. least bad, of two evils, Il.
2.in form φέριστος, id=Il.; mostly in voc. φέριστε, id=Il., Aesch., Soph.
II.comp., φέρτερος, η, ον, braver, better, Hom.:— πολὺ φέρτερόν ἐστιν 'tis much better, id=Hom.;— τέττιγος φέρτερον ᾁδεις, as adv., Theocr.
The posit. occurs in προφερής: perh. the Root is φέρεσθαι, so that the orig. sense would be quick in action, vigorous.
