Enter the Nurse from the house.

Nurse
Dearest ladies, how disaster follows upon disaster this day! For my lady within the house, Hermione I mean, [805] deserted by her father and at the same time aware of what a dreadful deed she has committed in plotting to kill Andromache and her son, means to die, afraid that in requital for her deeds her husband may send her away in disgrace from this house [ [810] or put her to death for trying to kill those she should not]. She tried to hang herself and was with difficulty restrained by that the slaves who guarded her restrained her, and they also took a sword from her right hand. So great is the pain she feels after the fact: she has learned [815] that what she did before was not well done. I for my part am weary with restraining her from the noose, my friends. But I ask you to go into this house and save her from death. For when new friends arrive they are more persuasive than the old.

Shouting is heard within.

Chorus Leader
[820] There, inside the house we hear the servants shouting about what you have come to tell us. But it is likely that the poor woman will make plain how she laments over the terrible deeds she has done. For here she comes out of the house fleeing the hands of her servants and longing to die.
