But I, if I may not (as some people think I ought not) boast that I have
sacrificed my own private feelings of indignation and enmity to the
republic, which it appears to me to be the duty of a great and wise man to
do, will at all events avail myself of this plea,—which is of
force not so much to gain praise as to avoid reproach,—namely,
that I am a grateful person, and that I am inclined to be moved, not only by
such exceeding services as his, but even by a moderate display of good-will
towards me.
