He did so rashly, I confess it;
but the case could not possibly be changed then; either he was forced to put on an Egyptian cloak at Alexandria, in order afterwards
to be able to wear his gown at Rome; or, if he retained his gown in Egypt he
must have discarded all hope of recovering his fortunes.
