AARDENBURG Zeeland, Netherlands.

Vicus whose ancient name is unknown; in the early Middle Ages it was Rodanborch. Excavations have revealed some large stone buildings (forum?) and the foundations of a Celtic-Roman temple (5.5 x 5.5 m). The vicus (area ca. 10 ha) seems to have flourished particularly in the 2d and 3d c. A.D. No coins found there date later than ca. 273. Aardenburg probably belonged to the civitas Menapiorum, and may have had a military function ca. 170-270. Many bronzes, especially statuettes, and much pottery have been found, mostly of Flemish-Roman workmanship.
