AMAROUSION (Marusi) Attica, Greece.

Named for a sanctuary dedicated to the Euboian cult of Artemis Amarysia, in the deme of Athmonon. Pausanias (1.1417) refers to a local legend that a Sanctuary of Aphrodite Urania was founded there by a King Porphyrion, a name taken by Frazer to indicate a Phoenician settlement. SW of Marusi, Lolling found two boundary inscriptions for the Artemis Sanctuary, one archaic, the other perhaps from a period of renovation under Herodes Atticus. A reference to Amarysian games occurs in another inscription concerning a local township decree.
