SUCIDAVA
or Pîrjoaia (Izvoarele) Constanţa, Romania.
On the right bank of the Danube, 3 km
downstream from the village, are the ruins of a Roman
fortress of the 4th c. A.D. It has not been excavated systematically. The path of the rampart can still be seen as
well as the outline of a Christian basilica inside the city
walls. The
Peutinger Table and the
Antonine Itinerary
identify the site as Sucidava (in Moesia Secunda). According to a recent hypothesis, this would be the site of Daphne, which Procopius includes among the phrouria on the left bank of the Danube (
De aed. 4.7) but which
A. Marcellinus, perhaps with more justification, places on
the right bank of the river.
