SAMOUSSY Aisne, France.

Site in the E canton of the Laon arrondissement.

A Roman villa has been excavated N of the present- day village. No complete plan has resulted, but the finding of some post-holes suggests that the site contained wooden structures. Potsherds are abundant, in the main of crudely made ware. A few samples may possibly date from the Late Empire, while certain other forms are probably Carolingian. If so, this would be the first example of a settlement on the E borders of France occupied continuously from the Late Empire to the beginning of the 11th c.
