BARRAFRANCA
Province of Enna, Sicily.
A large agricultural center which, according to local
scholars, may be identified with Calloniana, the statio
located by Roman itineraries between Philosophiana
(modern Sofiana) and Corconiana (Sommatino?). Supposedly the Roman mansio proper is to be found a few km from Barrafranca, in the Ciarfara area, where there are archaeological remains of the Roman and Byzantine periods. This hypothesis has not, however, been
verified through scientific excavation.
