SIPOVO
Bosnia-Herzegovina, Yugoslavia.
Remains of a Roman settlement, and at nearby Gromile
the ruins of a Roman castrum. Inscribed epigraphical
monuments have also been found in this area. An inscription “. . . l(oco) d(ato) d(ecurionum) d(creto)” with
traces of the letters ELVE or LLV, may indicate the
name of a municipium. The monument in honor of the
legate of the Legio XV pia fidelis dates from the 2d c.
A.D. Remains of a sepulchral inscription reveal that a
mausoleum had been built. There is a fragment dedicated
to Augustus and Roma. Various unrelated artifacts date
the Roman ruins to the 1st and 2d c. A.D.
Remains of Early Christian churches with vaulted
tombs have been found.
