TRIPONTIUM
(Caves Inn) Warwickshire, England.
A roadside settlement along Watling Street. It is
mentioned in the
Antonine Itinerary. Much has been
found in sand and gravel-working, including a military
mess-tin, which suggests a 1st c. fort S of the main finds.
Excavation has revealed a spread of occupation for at
least 1.6 km along the road, and a scatter of 4th c. burials.
The only substantial building with a stone foundation is
a house of courtyard type which may have been a mansio.
A small, rectangular, single-ditched enclosure is bisected
by the road; and like others along this road is presumably
4th c.
