The imperfect, when accompanied by an expression of past time, is used of actions which had been in progress for some time and were still in progress (cp. 1885): ““τὸ Π̔ήγιον ἐπὶ πολὺν χρόνον ἐστασίαζεRhegium had been for a long time in a state of factionT. 4.1. If the action is regarded as completed the pluperfect is used.
