[1232] λείπει fail: Polyb. 2. 14 τῶν Ἄλπεων παρώρεια ... προκαταλήγουσα λείπει τοῦ μὴ συνάπτειν αὐτῷ, the chain of the Alps, stopping short, fails of touching (the inmost recess of the Adriatic).

μὴ οὐ because of οὐδὲ with λείπει: the added τὸ makes the idea of the infin. stand out more independently of λείπει: cp. 283.-ᾔδειμεν, which the MSS. give, should be kept. It was altered to ᾔδεμεν by Elms. on Eur. Ba. 1345ὄψ᾽ ἐμάθεθ᾽ ἡμᾶς, ὅτε δ᾽ ἐχρῆν, οὐκ ᾔδετε”: where the εἴδετε of the MSS. is possible, but less probable. Aeschin. 3.82 has ᾔδειμεν: Dem. 55.9ᾔδειτε.” See Curtius Verb 11.239, Eng. tr. 432, who points out that the case of the third pers. plur. is different: for this, the forms in εσαν (as ᾔδεσαν alone have good authority.
