[137] ὑπὲρ γὰρ οὐχὶ i.e. not merely in the cause of Laius, whose widow he has married. The arrangement of the words is designed to help a second meaning of which the speaker is unconscious: “in the cause of a friend who is not far off” )his own father(. The reference to Laius is confirmed by κείνῳ προσαρκῶν in 141.
