ἐγὼ δὲ τὸν ἐμόν “κ.τ.λ.”: for the tribrach, cp. Ph.1232 n.—She can dispute the old saying, because she forebodes that her life will be bitter to the end. The pathos here depends less on retrospect than on presentiment: cp. 37, 46.— This passage illustrates Aristotle's remark that a person who speaks with strong feeling (“παθητικῶς”) may effectively impugn the truth of popular maxims (“τὰ δεδημοσιευμένα”): Rhet.2. 21§ 13.
