ὥστε μήποτ᾽ ἂν παραινέσαι, i.e., “ὥστε οὔποτ᾽ ἂν παραινέσαιμι”. The words προθυμίανἔργου form a single notion, the sense being the same as if ἄδηλον were “ἀδήλου”. Cp. Ant.794 n. “ἄδηλον” here means, ‘untried by previous test’: cp. her own words in 590 f. So in Thuc.5. 103ἀφανεῖς ἐλπίδες” (as opp. to “φανεραί”) are those which rest on no solid ground. Cp. id. 1. 78 “ἐν ἀδήλῳ κινδυνεύεται”.—For λαβεῖν, ‘conceive,’ cp. Soph. Ph.1078φρόνησιν...λάβοι”: Soph. Ai.345αἰδῶ...λάβοι”.
