ἀνοῖξαι. Contemporary evidence confirms H.'s tradition of the piety of Menkaura. Of course, however, the temples were not ‘opened’, for they had never been closed (cf. 124. 1 n.). It need hardly be added that his justice, in which ‘by gifts from his own purse he satisfied the wrath of him who found fault after the sentence’, is a popular myth.
