At Dodona the voice of Zeus was heard in the leaves of the oak; cf. Od.xiv. 327-8ὄφρα θεοῖο ἐκ δρυὸς ὑψικόμοιο Διὸς βουλὴν ἐπακούσαι”. So at Thebes the wind blew always in a prophetic grotto except for one day in each month (Hellan. fr. 152; F. H. G. i. 66).

ἱρῶν. There were two kinds of divination from sacrifices, viz. δἰ ἐμπύρων and ἱεροσκοπία (watching the fire and examining the entrails); no trace of either has been found in Egypt.
