ἄλλα. For Darius' first coining Darics cf. iv. 166. 2 n.; for their value cf. Head, H. N. p. 826. They were worth twenty silver σίγλοι, about <02>12s., and were almost identical with the Croesus staters, but had three per cent. of alloy.

χαλεπός. This epithet with ἤπιος is an echo of Od. ii. 232-4.
