ἵπποι. The hardihood of the Cossack ponies is well known; in Greece and Asia Minor horses were rare and carefully tended (hence their liability to ‘frost-bite’), while the hard work was done by mules and asses. Cf. for the absence of the latter in Scythia 129. 2 n.
