ἀμαθέστατα. H. rejects the ‘noble savage’ theory which the Greeks tended to hold about the peoples of the North (cf. 2. 1 n.). The exception made by H. in favour of the Scyths is due to Anacharsis (c. 76), and is tacitly contradicted by Thucydides (ii. 97. 6).

ἐντός: not ‘west of’ (Stein) but ‘in the region of’.
