The origin of the Scyths. H. gives three different versions, the Scythian and the Pontic Greek, which are mythological, and a third (c. 11 seq.), which he adopts as resting on the authority of both nations (12. 3), and which he partially confirms by quoting Aristeas (c. 13), who differs only as to the race which drove the Scyths into their new country. This last version is accurate in two points: (a) it recognizes the earlier possession of the country by the Cimmerians; (b) it gives a vera causa, an early ‘Völkerwanderung’; but it is full of legendary details.
