πίτυος τρόπον. The old name of Lampsacus was Pityusa (Charon, fr. 6, F. H. G. i. 33; Strabo 589). No Lampsacene could have misunderstood the jest, nor could H., if he had read Charon (Macan; cf. Introduction, § 19 (b)).
