πολλοὶ ... ἄνδρες: cf. viii. 68. α 1. The remark seems inapposite of troops which fought on stubbornly all day through without success. Stein suggests it is a later addition by the author inserted in an inappropriate place. Gomperz (Her. Stud. ii. 85-6) would transfer it to the end of ch. 212, where it would be more suitable.
