διετείνοντο τὰ βέλεα: probably ‘stretched forth their javelins or throwing spears’; cf. κατακοντιεῖ (ch. 17. 3) and Thuc. viii. 108; less probably τὰ βέλεα may be taken with ὡς ἀπήσοντες, and the phrase construed ‘bent (their bows) (cf. iii. 35. 3) as though to shoot their arrows’.
