[530] ὀΠηδεῖν with “ἅμα” must mean “to help,” cf. Od. 7.165, τ” 398. It is not clear in what sense the Cretans think of “helping” men. Matthiae translates suppeditare; i.e. the Cretans would not have enough food for themselves or for pilgrims. Lang (after Franke) translates “wherefrom we might live well and minister to men,” and this is perhaps preferable; the labourers are worthy of their hire.
