[29] ἐφήσει. With “ὅπως” or a similar adv., after a past tense in the governing clause, Homeric usage almost requires the opt.: see Hermann, Op.ii. 26. The only real parallel to this fut. is Il.12. 59πεζοὶ δὲ μενοίνεον εἰ τελέουσιν”. In l. 386 some MSS. have “ὁππότε . . . ἐφείη”, whence we may read ἐφείη here also. The form ἐφήσει may have crept in from l. 39 “ὅππως δὴ . . . ἐφήσω”: cp. also 13. 376 “φράζευ ὅπως . . . ἐφήσεις”.
