[304] νέφεα πτώσσουσαι ‘shrinking from the region of the clouds,’ i.e. flying as low as possible.

ἵενται ‘are urged along,’ the passive of “ἵημι”, probably a different word from “ἵεμαι” ‘I aim at, desire.’

308-309,= Il.10. 483-484. Il., 21. 20-21.τῶν is masc., as in the Iliad.

κράτων τυπτομένων must be a gen. absolute. It takes the place of the phrase “ἄορι θεινομένων” in the Iliad— perhaps because Ulysses had no sword: see ll. 110-111 (Sittl, p. 48).
