[429] ἕδρας and ξύλα both go with οἰσέμεν. The servants are not only to bring clear water, but ‘seats and store of logs to set at either side’ (ἀμφί) of the altar which stood in the midst. For the combination at the introduction of the sentence, “οἱ δ᾽ ἄλλοι μένετε”, ‘but do all the rest of you bide here,’ compare “λαοὶ μὲν σκίδνασθε Od.2. 252, “ἄλλοι μὲν νῦν μίμνετε Od.9. 172, “μίμνετε δ᾽ ἄλλοι πάντες Il.19. 190.

οἰσέμεν, Epic weak aorist formed as a Thematic tense with “ε” and “ο” instead of “α^”. So “οἰσέμεναι Od.8. 399; 12.10; 18.291; Il.3. 120; 23.564. In Il.18. 191οἰσέμεν” is generally described as the future infin., but it can equally well be the aorist. See note on “τελευτηθῆναι Od.2. 171.
