[245] ἐπὶ στάθμην, ‘to the line.’ στάθμη is a string which, having been rubbed with chalk or ochre, is drawn tight along a surface. It is then lifted by the workman's finger and thumb and suffered to fly back again, so as to leave a straight line marked in colour. It is to be distinguished from “σταφύλη”, the plumb-line for testing levels, Il.2. 765.Cp. Fur. Herc.944βάθρα
