[319] δὲ μάλ᾽ ἡνιόχευεν, ‘and she drove just so that they might keep up on foot, both the handmaids and Odysseus, and she laid on the lash with judgment.’

μάλα stands in close relation to ὅπως, as given in the translation, ‘just so that:’ for the adverb cannot take an ethical force and mean ‘skilfully.’
