[295] αἴθοπα, used in Homer of “οἶνος, χαλκός, καπνός”, is variously rendered, e. g. Hesych. interprets it, in its use with “οἶνος”, by “μέλας” (“πυρώδης”) “ θερμαντικός”. Probably the common meaning is ‘fiery-looking,’ equally well used of the brilliant colour of wine, the flashing surface of metal, or the gleam of fire showing through smoke.
